About The Lake County Marriage Index
The index below was developed from the Marriage Registration books located in the clerks office in Lake County, Indiana. A total of 124,270 marriage records spanning from 1837 to 24 August 1933 have been indexed. The indexes include the following information: the book number, page number, a license number, application number, groom and bride’s name, age (if given), a second spelling (if given), the application date, return date, marriage date, the marrying official, and the clerk. We have added the church name (if given) in the notes columns and whether there was consent from a parent or nearest relative. An X in the second spelling columns indicates that a second spelling exists. A second entry including the alternate spelling can usually be found directly preceding or following the first one.

About the Original Marriage Applications
The information in this index will lead you to the original marriage applications that are on microfilm at the Lake County Government Center and that have additional information not included in the indexes.
Applications from 1837 to March 1905 only provide the groom and brides names, the date of the application, the marriage date, the return date of the license, and who married the couple.
From March 1905 to the present the applications include the names of the marrying couple, birth dates, place of birth, parents’ names, occupation, and place of residence. The applications also included questions about whether the persons were married before and if so, how the previous marriage ended. Sometimes death date, divorce date, and/or case numbers may be found on the application.
How to Get the Marriage Applications
To receive a copy of marriage applications and licenses, genealogy researchers can download and fill out a form to send to the Marriage Department in the Lake County Clerk’s office. For genealogy research the charge is $1.00 per page (usually 3 pages) payable by cash, money order, or certified check. Personal checks are not accepted. The clerk’s office asks that you request only three records at a time. Certified copies can only be obtained by an individual who is listed on the license and by providing proper identification.
