August 15 Meeting CancelledAugust, 14, 2026 As our local members are aware, NW Indiana was hit with a devastating storm this week. Most of Lake County and half of Porter County are still without power. Road conditions are still not clear, especially in Portage. Things we take for granted (like traffic lights at major intersections) just don’t exist right now. WE ARE CANCELLING OUR AUGUST 15TH MEETING. It will not be offered on Zoom, as most of the board is still without power and internet service. Please stay home and safe. If you have power, please reach out to friends and family to check on them and offer help like showers, laundry, and device charging. Please help out your neighbors with debris clean up. ABout The Northwest Indiana Genealogical SocietyThe Northwest Indiana Genealogical society (NWIGS) is a volunteer run non-profit organization that preserves and shares the history and genealogy of Lake County and Porter Counties in Indiana. It hosts monthly classes in-person and online, publishes a monthly newsletter, and creates resources to help you with your research and learn about genealogy and family history.
Meetings & ClassesAt our monthly meetings, we invite local and national experts to share information that will help you become a more effective genealogist. Attendees are also invited to share their genealogical discoveries at our occasional sharing sessions.

We’re Looking for a 1st Vice-President!
The Northwest Indiana Genealogical Society (NWIGS) is currently seeking a volunteer 1st Vice-President, and we’d love to fill this role as soon as possible. If you enjoy genealogy, connecting with interesting speakers, and helping keep our society active and engaging, this could be a perfect fit!
The best part? You don’t have to live in Northwest Indiana. This role can be done remotely, but you do need to be a member of NWIGS. Like all of our board positions, this is a volunteer role, but it’s also a fun way to get more involved with the genealogy community. What does the 1st Vice-President do? The 1st Vice-President helps support the President and the organization while also leading one of our most important areas--programs and speakers. Duties include: 🔹 Filling in for the President when needed and stepping in if the office becomes vacant 🔹 Serving as Chairperson of the Program Committee 🔹 Finding and scheduling engaging speakers for our monthly meetings 🔹 Coordinating speaker contracts and sharing payment information with the treasurer 🔹 Gathering and preparing speaker handouts for members 🔹 Managing our Zoom meetings for board and member meetings (sending links and reminders) 🔹 Creating quick meeting surveys (both on Zoom and for in-person attendees) 🔹 Sending monthly MailChimp reminders about upcoming meetings 🔹 Posting occasional updates on Facebook In short, you’ll help bring great programs and learning opportunities to our members while working with a friendly and supportive board. If you’ve ever wanted to play a bigger role in the genealogy community, help keep our meetings engaging, and meet fascinating speakers from across the genealogy world, this is a wonderful opportunity. 📩 Interested or have questions? Reach out to us—we’d love to talk with you about joining the board! Support local history and genealogy
